Book Review Chetan Bhagat : half girlfriend…. What’s good in it for an English Learner.

Book: Half Girlfriend; Author: Chetan Bhagat; Publisher: Rupa Publications

Pages: 260; Price: Rs 176

Chetan Bhagat, the has been writing for years, and his books have sold in big numbers for many reasons that he chooses the right words that easy and tells the story in a format that’s most acceptable to the Indian reader. We have been treated to Five Point Someone, One Night at a Call Centre, The Three Mistakes of My Life, 2 states and Revolution 2020. The less known non-fiction book ‘What Young India Wants’ did not sell as many copies which was expected (no surprises his non-fiction did not cut the ice with the audience he generally has).

Now, we get Half Girlfriend – my fourteen year daughter liked it (the plot setting that is an English learner) and requested me to read – five times before i touched it!. As I spoke my friends and read the reviews,  ‘There has already been some feminist outrage over the crudeness of the title, but as we begin to read we find out that Bhagat simply repeats his standard settings – a college, a common activity and a girl”

Like in all of Bhagat’s other novels the language remains simple and easy for someone with not so good English to follow the story, the hero, a man, suffers from a lack of self esteem. Like in most other novels, the girl he chases is beautiful, talented and we are given the impression that she is too good for him. (like in many other books!)

Additionally, Madhav is from a village in Half Girlfriend, which means the city/village divide is even higher, and the difficulty of his task to win the favor of this girl even greater. He comes from Bihar, the most ‘talked-about’ of the Indian states, and the most backward (a stereotype like all Punjabies want to re-settle in Canada) . He meets and falls in love with a beautiful girl from Delhi. Delhi girls, by definition, are all beautiful, fair and wear short clothes (stereotype again!). Bihari boys are closet chauvinists who freak out when denied the favor of the opposite sex, and utter choice, crass abuse in Bhojpuri (Mathali or Magahi) . Thus, Bhagat manages to reinforce many stereotypes about India and Indians.

What Yash Chopra was to Bollywood in the 90s, Chetan is to Indian literature today…. same old story served in new manner- a plot that cannot fail until the public really changes (which is less possible in 5-10 years).  As I said, His books are in simple English, the script is rehashed, it reinforces stereotypes, and there is a boy chasing a girl (usually in college or after classes).

We get similar fare in Half Girlfriend, except that Bhagat now wants to prove the point that a country bumpkin from the ‘worst’ state in India can end up with a very rich, very beautiful, very ‘modern’ girl from the most sophisticated college in Delhi.

Though I have pointed out the similarities in most of Chetan Bhagat’s books, there are some stark differences between Half girlfriend and the likes of 5 Point Someone. Revolution 2020 is the only one I have not read. All his book title have a number in it this one has half and its half the fun too as i got in reading his first book. five point still remains is best work and looking at the writing style has has adopted it does not seem that he will change.

Half Girlfriend has really exposed Chetan Bhagat, not to be an imaginative as a writer. The earlier books were readable because most were based on Bhagat’s own life experiences. He could relate to the matter and hence expressed it better. He has done good amount of research in all his books.

The last two books fumble for the lack of relevance and context (they have reduced in the relevance for sure!). Half Girlfriend clearly shows that Bhagat has been unable to break out of the tried and tested boy-meets-girl script even after the incidences ceased to have basis in his own reality. The fact that he cannot think of a fresh script would point to his inadequacies as a writer. Bhagat in this book, also fails to tell us why a high-class metropolitan girl would fall for a rural boy with no talent except at basketball. While this is not impossible in real life, the reasons behind it remain unexplored until the very end. Chetan Bhagat’s book can be accused of relaying more on chance encounters, which means we as layperson could also get such chances of learning English from our girl-friends or boy-friends. In reality this does not happen!

Here’s another blow: Most of Bhagat’s other books held a lesson or moral for everyone to follow, however mediocre the expression was. Half Girlfriend is devoid of moral teachings. This is not to say that the book is an immoral piece of work – just that it’s a rambling love story lacking in moral purpose. There si motivation for people to speak better English to gain self-esteem and therefore some confidence – which is also better is plots like English-vinglish as movie.

But is that the worst of it? No. Would it be reasonable if I were to say that the book propagates the idea that if you seemed desperate enough to win a woman’s heart, she’d finally give in? In short, the philosophy that the girl always means yes even if she says no, as long as she’s being friendly.

One thing that can be said about Half Girlfriend is that it is less boring to read than Revolution 2020 ( I left it mid-way when once I picked it). This may be ascribed to the Delhi connect, which appeals to the Indian metropolitan crowd, and the stereotypes of Delhi women and Bihari men which everyone seems to love reading and assimilating into their minds. Of course, there’s the fact that Bhagat again manages to satiate the Indian appetite for dreamy, mushy romance. And sex.

So, the million dollar (or Rs 176) question: Is it worth a read? Only if you are a hardcore Chetan Bhagat fan, because it’s pretty standard plot (once again).

Spread of Organised work culture and professionalism

Spread of Organised work culture and professionalism

The Organised work is going to grow and more professionalism is required to join the Industry today, be it any field of work. Take for example: Madhuri Dikshit after a long phase of silence comes back to ‘filmdom’ and maybe she can kill the career of some new-heroine  with her re-polished professionalism . As we have seen, like many other industries, the Hindi cinema or Bollywood has organised itself more in the past 10 years. Even the starts of yesterday who enjoyed mass-appeal just for their smile or body are turning to be more professional … Professionalism the trend that started with Amir Khan is going to live on and grow!

At the same time India has a large pool of people still working in the unorganized sector: look at this article in Hindu- Business Line to look at the numbers and trends. An Interesting question i was asked a few days earlier: “What are the sectors- that are most likely to become more organised soon enough that ‘you may have a join a course on professionalism’ in the short-run of say next 5 years?”

What are the skills needed to join your profession? and what is the knowledge you will need to have?

Read the post to answer the simple question above so that you can grow in your profession… what is the profession you want to enter or which industry you want to work in?

Management, Hospitality Industry or Travel & Tourism, Accountant, BPO, Apparel, IT, consulting are highly organised sectors so talented professionals are required. India although has surplus manpower but at the same time there is an acute shortage of  skilled professionals. Professional bodies (like The Institute of Chartered Accounts of India) and National Skill Development Corporation are doing their job but many private institutions like  T.r.i.c.k.s are needed to Train masses on basic communication skills.

As we do my job as a professionally certified trainer ; are you getting ready to acquire the ‘skills for the new world’ and join an organised sector?

Any job or profession that has maximum value creation or risk of human life is likely to be organised sooner. How much do you agree with me?

Knowledge is Power; But its the Skill – that gets things done!

I repeat (for emphasis) : Knowledge is Power; But it is the Skill – that gets things done!

How much you understand the above statement defines how sale-able your resume is and apply ‘the above’ at the time of writing your CV. You demonstrate it more with some real-life examples at the time of face-to-face interview. A Senior Industry professional stated yesterday evening “It’s the Skills that Sell” another comment made by a very senior professional who is known in the industry for his timing the statements right “they call you for the interview as they want to see your confidence”.

Clearly state in your CV you knowledge and skills:

1) the Knowledge you have that is required as per Job Description: this includes market understanding, domains, subjects that you can write an essay on just on the strength of your understanding. Cramming something or remembering some names, terms is Not the kind of Knowledge anyone will pay for.
-Would you (as CEO of T.r.i.c.k.s) pay me Rs. 2 lac/month just because I have read 2000 books.
2) the Skills that you have acquired and are relevant to the job: these include social and professional skills. The things that you ‘can do’. There is very little argument that ‘communication skill’ is the most important of the skills as it is vital but do not make ‘not having enough of any skill’ as your limitation. Just state what you ‘can do’ without much need for preparation:
-I was given to make my public presentation to the clients of SQL Star -right on the day of my joining the Delhi office as an Area Manager for eLearning a new product. – The ink on my ‘business cards’ was still wet when I handed them over very proudly that evening to my delighted audience.

Have a look at the knowledge and skills that come from Learning English- a global language of Business.

Why would anyone learn English and what is the skill gain?
Why would anyone learn English and what is the skill gain?

Remember Degrees/Diplomas is not knowledge – they are qualifications (sometimes essential with %age of marks stated) can get your resume to be shortlisted by the HR. If you are sitting in an Interview meeting – your Degree has done what it could do i.e. get you a meeting with the hiring personnel (HR and hiring manager) there can be more depending on the level. I at my level would definitely meet all the CxOs before meeting the business owner. This is not to attach any ego with it but only a business-owner understands the ‘business language’ and sometimes it is more Mathematics than English.

Bio-data is a term that comes from the days of the physical-labor so as a knowledge worker don’t state that term and write the best Curriculum Vite’ or Profile/Resume’ for people with some experience.

I want to Learn English
Conversation is English is a Sale-able skill.. How many more do you need to do the Job well?

People who say I have zero experience or I am a fresher so I have “no knowledge or skills” to state in my CV. I am afraid to, “the people without any sale-able skills will continue to sit at home OR they should join a practical skill-oriented program that imparts ‘sale-able’ skills”. Govt. of India knows well enough with data to substantiate: when it says that the country needs skilled people. There is actually ‘skill shortage’ not ‘people shortage’. Fortunately for India there is enough Knowledge or gyan people have. While ability to talk in a professional or Business language is still not counted as a skill as that is the bed-rock of any skilled person. How many times have you heard sales-men of traders say ‘main baato ki khaata hun’ (I eat my bread from what I talk). In my view – it the conversations that count the most. All the deals and business happens after conversations and so much ‘on the phone’

Knowledge when gained right must translate to Skills. As a Communication skills trainer I like to work more and more on your skills while we impart all the knowledge of the Language that is needed. In the garb of our Word-Play program we actually give you English for everyday conversations (a skill) and In the ‘Get Selected’ program the focus is on ‘Discussion, Debating and Presentation skills’ plus there is a bonus of some personality development topics like: Grooming, Asking and Answering questions, Handling difficult questions. All these are vital skills for success in any Interview.

One of my students (I believe it was Chandan – a Telecom Engineer) wrote on the ‘Thought of the Day’ white board some good words:

“Life is a Series of Interviews!”

Thanks Savita for writing the Knowledge-Skill quote on the white broad.. really appreciated!

Get Lost! Don’t Loose your cool; Have fun after-all, it’s a weekend!

Have you ever had fun in getting Lost?

If your answer is a big YES (with a broad smile on your face)… you are really a Cool Guy/Girl.  There are a lot of questions to ask ‘Mr/Ms. Cool’

Where were you? What were you doing there? Was it on the Road? Where you alone or was there someone with you? Which city was it? Did it scare you? …. and finally how did you find yourself or your destination?

You still remain a bit Boring: If you ‘get lost’ in book or a video game!

All of us get lost at many a times but it may be interesting if you do it deliberately. Read this article on BBC Travel: The art of getting lost.  My sincere thanks to Suemedha Sood. I ‘got lost’ in the pleasant memories of solitary

drives that I have done across India when I would just love to travel with no particular destination in my mind – just go where the road goes, no ringing mobile phone, no worries of catching up on schedule. It was just about enjoying the journey itself. I went to the end of the road in The Himalayas up to Munsiyari – Got Lost on the Road to find myself in the middle of no where!!

Yes I did carry the lonely planet map book of the Indian subcontinent gifted to me by a German friend – Thanks to Martin,  I found my way back to my home in NOIDA.

Please don’t get lost in the picture at the end of this POST – Its a Maze in Denver and try to explain it in DTP activity in the class on Monday (for Get Selected and Go Global Students of Conversation in English class at T.r.i.c.k.s -personality development center at Noida)

No classes over the weekend so:  “Get Lost! Don’t Loose you cool; Have fun…after-all It’s a Saturday!
